Anthropic Investors Eye Billions Ahead of Potential $2 Trillion Listing

Early backers and late-stage giants have accumulated substantial wealth from their positions in the AI lab, with some holdings already worth more than $10 billion before a public debut.

Nearly $10 billion. That is the current private market value of a single early investor’s stake in Anthropic, the leading artificial intelligence developer. This figure highlights the massive financial upside that awaits those who backed the company before its anticipated public listing this year. Market watchers expect the IPO to value the firm at as much as $2 trillion, a jump from its current private valuation of $965 billion.

The wealth accumulation among Anthropic’s backers is already significant, even before the company goes public. Data from Bloomberg indicates that the stakes held by venture capitalists and early supporters total billions of dollars at the current price point. The company’s rapid rise has transformed modest early investments into multi-billion dollar holdings for a select group of institutions and individuals.

Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, is among those reaping the rewards. PitchBook data shows that Schmidt participated in Anthropic’s Series A round in 2021. At that time, the startup was valued at just $461 million. Today, his ownership stands at approximately 1% of the company. Even at the current private valuation, his stake is worth nearly $10 billion.

Later-stage investors have also seen substantial gains, though their entry points were much higher. Iconiq, an investment firm, wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year. This occurred when the company was already valued at $183 billion. That late-stage bet is now worth $17 billion. Analysts suggest this position could double in value upon the completion of the IPO.

Menlo Ventures, which led the company’s Series D round, has invested more than $1 billion in Anthropic over time. This cumulative investment has grown into a stake currently valued at $14 billion. Meanwhile, Sequoia, a prominent venture capital firm, entered the picture earlier this year. It invested $3 billion when Anthropic was valued at $380 billion. This move secured approximately 1% ownership, meaning Sequoia has already more than doubled its initial investment.

Sound Ventures, launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, also holds a significant position. The firm invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round. Since then, it has funneled an additional $400 million into the company. This strategy has resulted in a stake worth billions of dollars today. It is worth noting that Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch a new venture capital firm.

Spark Capital, the only venture firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic, has experienced the most dramatic percentage growth. The firm invested $75 million in the same 2023 Series C round when the company was valued at $5 billion. That position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold. Today, Spark Capital’s stake is valued at $7 billion.

The stakes for these investors are high as the public listing approaches. A valuation of up to $2 trillion would represent a historic moment for the AI sector. For the backers listed above, the IPO promises to solidify their financial gains and potentially double their returns. The coming months will be critical in determining the final value of these positions as the company transitions to public markets.
